Auburndale, FL --- The Worcester State baseball team dropped a tough 8-3 decision this afternoon to Rowan to start off their Florida spring training trip dropping their record to 0-3 on the young season. The Profs improve their overall mark to 4-1-1 as junior Jordan Marsch (Brick, NJ) and sophomore Brad Woodend (Medford, NJ) combined to go 5-for-7 with four RBIs in the victory.

Rowan jumped onto the board with a 5-0 lead over the first four innings highlighted by an RBI single by Marsch that scored an extra run on an error in the outfield in the opening frame and a solo-home run by Marsch in the third.

Worcester State would respond in the bottom of the fourth scoring a pair of runs on a run producing single by sophomore Shawn Coakley (Spencer, MA) and when junior Nick Caparell (N. Attleboro, MA) crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

The Profs answered when Marsch plated his third run of the afternoon in the top of the fifth to make the score 6-2.

Senior Matthew Hart (N. Easton, MA) led of the bottom of the fifth with a triple and scored on an RBI ground out by junior TJ Magnell (Leominster, MA) to cut the lead in half (6-3), but that was as close as the Lancers would get.

Rowan scored a pair of runs over the next two frames scoring on consecutive miscues in each inning to break the game open as they would cruise ahead for the victory.

Profs junior Jay Gallen (Gibbsboro, NJ) was outstanding as he pitched five solid innings giving up three runs on four hits while he tallied eight strikeouts with two walks. Rowans bullpen would preserve the shutout over the games final four innings and the reserves would tally six punchouts and yield no walks over that stretch.

Rowan tagged starter junior Joey Lucier (Brockton, MA) for six runs (four earned) through the first five innings while he finished with a strikeout, a walk and five hit batters. Lucier was relieved by first-year Kyle St. Thomas (Bridgewater, MA) who gave up two unearned runs over the next two innings while senior Pat Good (Hull, MA) and Hart pitched in the eighth and ninth for a perfect frame each.

The Lancers continue their trip with a double-header against Bowdoin tomorrow at noon. Senior Craig McBride (Attleboro, MA) will take the mound in game one while classmate Bob DeVito (Webster, MA) goes in the nightcap of the twinbill.
