Worcester, MA- As the final two weeks of the season hit the calendar the Worcester State Baseball team (18-10, 9-6) are aiming to claim the final two series and take a top spot moving into the conference post season. Their second to last test is Salem State with their single game on the road this afternoon against the Vikings (13-14, 8-7) in a crucial battle for positioning.
Final
Worcester State: 3
Salem State: 8
How it Happened:
In this conference matchup, the Lancers would see themselves down by the end of the first inning 1-0. In the next inning the Vikings would continue their offensive momentum adding in four more runs to their initial score. At the top of the 3rd inning the Lancers would gain some ground on the Vikings. Sophomore Ryan Jewett (Natick, MA) would smack one for a triple bringing home junior Joe Auger (Lowell, MA). Next, first year Riggs Catlin (Dedham, MA) would bring home Jewett to put the score to 2-5. Before the third out senior Tyler Smith (Leominster, MA) would step up hitting a single RBI which allowed Catlin to make it home. Salem would bring in one more run at the bottom of the third to make it 6-3.
For the next few innings, both pitchers would find their groove making it hard for their opposition to get anything going offensively. At the bottom of the 7th inning the Vikings would strike again with two more runs increasing their lead 8-3 leaving an uphill battle for the Lancers. Ultimately, the deficit would be too much for the Lancers as they fell 8-3 in game one action of the series.
What's Next:
Worcester State (18-11, 9-7) will be back in action on Monday when they welcome the Vikings to Kevin D. Lyons Diamond for two games. Start time is scheduled for 2pm.
