Fitchburg, MA --- The Fitchburg State ice hockey team scored in bunches for the second straight contest as the Falcons posted a 5-4 victory over Worcester State College in MASCAC action this evening.

With the score knotted at 2-2 through two periods of play, Fitchburg State connected for three consecutive markers over ten minutes of action to secure its third victory of the season. Freshman Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, MA) led the Falcons third period scoring surge with two goals in the frame, while senior captain Andrew Hutton (Brewster, MA) added an empty-netter with 1:09 remaining.

After a silent second period which witnessed 22 shots on goal, Worcester State sophomore Cody Warila (Shirley, MA) gave the Lancers a one goal margin early in the third period with his second marker of the season. Fitchburg State responded quickly as Lawler recorded his first collegiate goal to tie the score at the 8:03 mark. Two minutes later, Lawler struck again, as the freshman forward laced a shot from 10 yards out and sniped the top right corner of the net to give the Falcons a one goal edge.

Both teams continued to battle over the next eight minutes with neither defense surrendering the game-changing score. The Lancers added a last minute score on Tim Stalmok’s (Paxton, MA) second goal of the season, but Hutton’s empty-netter at the 18:51 mark proved to be the game-winner.

Lawler (2 goals) and Hutton (1 goal, 1 assist) led the Fitchburg State offensive front with two points apiece, while sophomore Bobby Leiser (Monroe, NY) stopped 25 shots between the pipes. Senior Andrew Brady (Oreland, PA) (2 assists) and Stalmok (1 goal, 1 assist) turned in a solid game for the visitors, while freshman TJ Cueno (Woodridge, VA) stopped 20 shots in net as his record drops to 2-1.

Fitchburg State (3-2-1, 2-2 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts Worcester State College at 4 PM Worcester State (3-5, 1-3 MASCAC) will host Salem State College on Saturday at 5:35 p.m.
