Ice Hockey Drops 2-1 Decision to Westfield State

Westfield, MA --- Westfield State ran its unbeaten streak to seven games as it scored twice in the second period for a 2-1 Massachusetts State College Athletics Conference (MASCAC) ice hockey victory over Worcester State on Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Westfield, a second-year varsity program, is 5-0-2 overall and 3-0-2 in the MASCAC. Worcester drops to 3-6 and 1-4.

The Lancers opened the scoring with 3:34 left in the first period on a goal by sophomore forward Nick Asterito (Philadelphia, MA) on an assist by senior Mark Rintel (Oakland Gardens, NY).

The Owls tied it on a power play goal by steady senior Casey Mignone (Ramsey, NJ) 5:37 into the second period. Freshman Danny Kaufman (Scotch Plains, NJ) scored the game winning goal with 58 seconds left in the second stanza.

Westfield goal Ray Monroe (Shrewsbury, MA) recorded 34 saves while Worcester’s Zach Hansen (Dexter, MI) made 43 stops.

Following a timeout, WSC went with an empty net for the last 1:13 of the game, but could not score the game-tying tally to force an overtime

Worcester State closes out the first third of their MASCAC schedule and December with a 2 PM Saturday afternoon matchup against Salem State. Westfield plays on back-to-back nights at Trinity (7:30 PM) on Friday and against Plymouth State at home on Saturday at 5:35.
