Ice Hockey Skates Past Assumption, 5-2

Auburn, MA --- Junior teammates John Cahalane (Tewksbury, MA) and Nick Asterito (Philadelphia, PA) each tallied a goal and an assist to help lead Worcester State to a 5-2 triumph this evening over cross-town rival Assumption in non conference ice hockey action.

Cahalane put the Blue and Gold (9-8-3) up 1-0 with the only score of the opening frame 2:20 into the contest with his team-leading 13th marker of the season.

The Ice Dogs (9-12) answered 55 ticks into the second as freshman Mike Janson (Ridgewood, NJ) knot the score 1-1 before sophomore Pat Stychiewicz (Chicopee, MA) helped the Worcester State respond at the 2:33 mark.

Second-year Eric Rutz (Mechanicsburg, PA) put the hosts on top for good with what would be the game-winning goal on a 5x3 power play at 10:52.

WSU tacked on two more goals in the third period as freshman Derek Serbon (Crown Point, IN) added a tally with the extra man advantage and on a short-handed goal by Asterito at 5:54.

Assumption completed the scoring in the third as sophomore Kevin Meehan (Melrose, MA) scored midway though the stanza for the final score.

The Ice Dogs actually outshot the visitors 39-34 – including 22-18 in the final two periods. The visitors were also 0-for-5 on power plays. The game proved to be a physical one as the two squads were whistled for 21 penalties, four of which were game misconducts.

Asterito became the 41st Lancer to reach the 60 point milestone as he now leads the team with 25 points (9 G – 16 A).

First-year Taylor Fant (Denver, CO) improved his record to 2-1-1 as he stopped 37 shots tonight while freshman Bobby Bowden (Springfield, MA) collected 29 saves for Assumption.

Both teams will play conference opponents on the road on Saturday. Worcester State heads to Framingham State for a 3:15 game while the Ice Dogs will play Franklin Pierce at 7 PM.
