Men's Soccer Beats Crosstown Rival WPI In Extra Session

Worcester State 1, WPI 0   OT

Worcester, MA --- Freshman Alex Wolfel (Unionville, CT) tallied his first career goal 4:31 into the first sudden death overtime to propel visiting Worcester State University to a dramatic 1-0 victory over WPI on Wednesday evening in the season opener for both squads.

The Lancers bagged the winning tally when Brian Cormier (Hudson, MA) worked up the left side and found Laurence Moreno (Brimfield, MA).  Moreno quickly crossed it through the box to a streaking Wolfel, who deposited the ball in the far right corner of the net.
Despite being outshot 5-1 in the opening half, Worcester State had the best scoring chance of the first stanza when Julian Morales (Brighton, MA) launched a direct kick from 25 yards out in the 32nd minute that was repelled by WPI netminder Paul Moan (Watertown, MA)

WPI had the better of the scoring opportunities after intermission. Worcester State goaltender Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA) was up to the task as he snatched Tyler Modelski's (Hollis, NH) header and kicked away Keeon Tabrizi's (Harvard, MA) breakaway, that was setup by a nifty feed by Chris Ciampa (Danvers, MA), less than six minutes apart midway through the second half.  The Lancers had a chance in the final seconds of regulation but Andrew Babineau (Webster, MA) couldn't control a loose ball 15 yards away from the goal line.

Wilga recorded seven stops on the night en route to notching his fifth career shutout for the Lancers while Moan turned away two shots for the hosts.  Worcester State took home the victory despite being on the short end of the shooting totals (14-4) and corner kicks (5-3)

WPI turns its attention to this weekend's Worcester City Tournament. The Crimson and Gray open defense of their 2009 title on Friday at 4 PM when they face Anna Maria at Clark before taking on host Becker on Sunday at 2:30 PM.  Worcester State also competes in a tournament this weekend when they travel to Union.  The Lancers are slated to play Rensselaer on Friday at 6 PM before taking on the host Dutchman at the same time the following day.
