BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Worcester State men's soccer club came up short in their first Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) game of the season, as they fell 3-2 to the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers Friday night at Cleans Harbor Stadium.

Freshman Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, Mass.) owned the night on the front end for the Lancers, as he put both of Worcester State's goals up on the scoreboard. These accumulate to his third and fourth goals of the season, currently leading Worcester State in both goals and points (10).

Brasil was the one who broke the nil score in the 19th minute, as he received a pass from junior Tyler Church (Florence, Mass.) in a breakaway up the middle of the field.

It wasn't long after, that the Buccaneers answered with a goal in the 21st minute, as sophomore Michael Rouette (Three Rivers, Mass.) took a direct kick about 25 yards out, and slammed it past the Lancers' goal to tie the score at one.

With the score tied going into the half, each team came out ambitious for second half play.

Mass. Maritime would have a chance at the 60th minute mark, where they received another free kick, and the Buccaneers' Rouette slammed another one towards the goal, from where sophomore Kevin O'Leary (Norton, Mass.) would pull off a header and put the ball in the back of the net.

Two minutes later, the Buccaneers would get another scoring opportunity, as the Lancers turned the ball over about 10 yards out on the left side. Mass. Maritime's junior Thomas McCarthy (Tybee Island, Ga.) then put another goal up on the board, placing the Lancers behind 3-1.

With 27 minutes left on the clock, Worcester State had to gain some momentum and score two to keep play going. Lancers' Brasil stepped up in the 79th minute, scoring his second goal of the night off a Buccaneer turnover. But that goal wasn't all that was needed from the Lancers' front end and resulted in a 3-2 deficit for Worcester State.

Junior Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for the Buccaneers with a pair of saves, while senior Tim Schmidt (Southwick, Mass.) made 10 stops in the setback for the Lancers.

Massachusetts Maritime outshot Worcester State by a 17-9 margin overall (13-4 on goal), as the Lancers held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks for the contest.

Worcester State falls to 1-4-1 on the season, while Mass Maritime advances to 2-3 on the season.

The Lancers will take a week-break from play, as they will take on another MASCAC game next Saturday at Framingham State for a 12 noon game.
