Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Men's Soccer team returned to action tonight on Coughlin Field when they hosted Husson University in the second match of the season. The Lancers opened their season similar to last year with a 1-1 tie versus WPI and looked to change the tune tonight as they took on the Eagles.
FINAL SCORE: Worcester State 1- Husson 1
It was a humid day at the John Coughlin field with both teams showing outstanding efforts throughout the first half. The game was structured more in a quarter system with the extreme heat on the day but the players did not allow a touch of fatigue to affect them as they battled it on the turf. Scoring was opened by Worcester State through sophomore Wilber Garcia (Bilbao,Spain) off the opposing defender after a senior Manny Ramirez (Waltham,Mass.) corner kick. Closing in on the final minutes of the first half, Husson found an equalizer after numerous threats in the stretch in the Lancers defensive end. Hugo Llopiz's (Madrid,Spain) header off a free kick, assisted by Miguel Morales (Caracas,Venezuela) sailed just over senior Andy Ramirez (Park Ridge, MA) to tie the game up at a goal a piece. To begin the second half of play, Worcester State substituted goalkeeper in first year Tobias Schneider (Hudson,WI) as the first year received his first look at the pitch of the season. Schneider started off his collegiate career with a stellar second half performance that saw him amass a total of 3 saves throughout the half.
Worcester State moves to (0-0-2)(0-0) and will have 7 days off before traveling to UMass-Boston for a 1pm kickoff on September 13th.
