Indoor Track & Field Kicks off 2019-20 at Emmanuel Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's and women's indoor track & field teams opened their 2019-20 season Saturday at the Emmanuel College Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center.

The Worcester State women's team finished the day with a pair of event victories. In the 60 meter dash, an astounding five Lancers made the finals, led by winner Abigail MacGregor (Salem, N.H.). She edged out rookie second-place finisher Maureen Grady (Douglas, Mass.) by six one-thousandths of a second to take the top spot. In fifth for the Lancers was freshman Brooke Barriss (Melrose, Mass.) followed by classmates Elena Pelligrini (Ashland, Mass.) and Avonia Herbert (Sharon, Mass.) in seventh and eighth respectively.

Herbert also shined in the triple jump, picking up the victory with a jump of 10.98 meters. Grady finished fifth in the event at 10.22 meters.

MacGregor and Herbert finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth place in the 200 meter dash as well on the day. Grady rounded out her strong collegiate debut by placing second in the long jump with a leap of 5.18 meters. In other field events, senior Carina Fronteiro (Ipswich, Mass.) started strong with a third place finish and a heave of 11.64 meters. Freshman Odelia Konadu (Worcester, Mass.) was right behind Fronteiro at 11.45 meters to place fourth.

Other strong results for the Worcester State women included a third place finish in the mile run (5:27.03) by sophomore Ryann Molinari (Grafton, Mass.), a fifth place finish by Kasey Clark (Dudley, Mass.) in the mile (5:34.85), a fifth place finish from junior Kyra Siano (North Attleboro, Mass.) in the 800 meter run, and a sixth place finish from senior Brenda Thomas (Worcester, Mass.) in the 400 meter dash.

On the men's side, the top finish for the team came from junior Brian King (Stow, Mass.), the fourth place runner in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:01.75. Sophomore Robert Doig (Ashby, Mass.) also appeared near the top of the result sheet with an 11th place finish in the same event.

Sophomore Drew Fottler (Chelmsford, Mass.) looked strong in his return to the track with a sixth place finish in the 3000 meter run.

In the mile, sophomore Wayne Carey (Shrewsbury, Mass.) continued to shine for the Lancers, placing 11th overall with a time of 4:43.43. Rounding out Worcester State's top 12 finishers was sophomore Dariel Canela (Peabody, Mass.), the 12th place finisher in the shotput.

Worcester State will be off for the holiday season, before returning to the track on Jan. 11 as the Lancers head to Brandeis College for the Reggie Poyau Invitational.
