Lancers Swept by Fitchburg State, 3-1 and 13-7

Worcester, MA - The Worcester State College softball team dropped two important MASCAC games Tuesday evening at Rockwood Field losing to Fitchburg State by the final scores of, 3-1, and, 13-7.  The losses drop the Lancers to 7-14 (2-6 MASCAC) on the year while the visiting Falcons improve to 9-16 (4-4 MASCAC).

In game 1, Fitchburg State got on the board in the top of the first inning.  With one out, sophomore Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, MA) tripled to right-center and scored on a squeeze play executed by senior Jessie Krause (Cornwall, NY) to give the Falcons a, 1-0, lead.  Fitchburg added to their lead in the top of the third inning.  Eryne Cotter (N. Easton, MA) singled up the middle with one out and scored on an RBI triple to right field by Jenn Couture (Chicopee, MA).  Meghan Feeley (Bridgewater, MA) followed with a single to drive home Couture with Fitchburg State's third and final run of the game.

The Lancers prevented the shutout in the bottom of the sixth inning when Samantha Daly (Clayton, NC), who came on as a pinch runner for Treasa O'Neil (Abington, MA) who singled to open the inning, scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Ashley Nye (Marion, MA). 

Freshman Bethany Stone (Wells, ME) got the win for Fitchburg State.  Catherine Costopoulos (Tyngsboro, MA) took the loss for the home squad.

Game 2 featured an offensive outburst by both teams as Worcester State had 13 hits and Fitchburg State banged out 17.  The teams traded the lead 5 times over the course of 7 innings.  After two innings, Fitchburg State led, 3-1, but the Lancers posted 4 runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a, 5-3, lead.  The Falcons answered back with a three spot in the top of the fourth inning to retake the lead, 6-5.  Worcester State held the lead after two in the bottom of the fifth inning for the last time on the day.  Fitchburg State scored four runs in the top of the sixth with the game winning run on a bases loaded 3 RBI double by Jessie Krause to put the Falcons in front for good.

Left fielder Alicia Rocco (Tewksbury, MA) was a perfect 4-for-4 in the second game with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.  Lauren Cucinotta (Franklin, MA) and Trzcinski each had 3 hits in game 2 with Trzcinski driving in 5 runs.  Krause also posted 5 RBI in the win.  Worcester State's Ashley Nye was 3-for-3 in game 2 and freshman Karen Feeley (W. Springfield, MA) drove in 4 runs in the loss.

Stephanie Melanson (Malden, MA) picked up the win in relief.  Senior Danielle Caron (Peabody, MA) took the loss.

Worcester State gets right back at it tomorrow when they travel to WPI.  Fitchburg State will host MASCAC foe MCLA on Saturday.
