Softball Opens MASCAC Play With Sweep of Mass Maritime

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Sophomore Jamie Jacobs (Billerica, MA) and freshman Alex Kerr (Franklin, MA) combined for nine hits and drove in six runs each to lead Worcester State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 29-0 in the opener and 12-0 in the nightcap in the league openers for both squads Friday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field.

The visiting Lancers (8-6, 2-0 MASCAC) rapped out 37 hits for the twinbill and took control of both contests over their first two at-bats, jumping out to a 10-0 first inning advantage in the opener and a 7-0 edge over the first two frames of the nightcap. Junior Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, MA) collected three hits and drove in five runs at the plate in the first contest to help her own cause, as she tossed three hitless innings and struck out six to pick up the victory.

Kerr, who belted her first collegiate homer, joined sophomore Ashley Howe (Winchendon, MA) and freshman Kate Souder (Milford, MA) in driving in four runs each for Worcester State, which received a pair of hits and three RBI from Jacobs as well as three hits and a pair of RBI from sophomore Erica Cordio (Leominster, MA). Junior Kaitlyn Laflash (Northbridge, MA) and sophomore Lauren Besozzi (Milford, MA) each had two hits in the opening contest for the visitors, who finished with 23 safeties in the first tilt.

Freshman Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, MA) suffered the setback inside the circle for the host Buccaneers (2-4, 0-2 MASCAC), as she and fellow freshman Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, MA) and Stephanie Saulenas (Tolland, MA) picked up hits in the first contest for Massachusetts Maritime.

Jacobs and Laflash each drove in three runs in the nightcap triumph for the Lancers, who received three hits from Cordio as well as a pair of RBI from Kerr. Besozzi and senior Ashley Loomer (Pepperell, MA) each had two hits as well for Worcester State in support of sophomore Marcy Rumrill (Orange, MA), who allowed three hits and struck out four over the first four innings of work for the visitors. Johnson, senior Jess O'Meara (Stoneham, MA) and sophomore Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, MA) registered safeties in the second game setback for the Buccaneers, as Beaulieu added a single in suffering the pitching setback for the hosts.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Boston on Tuesday afternoon for a non-league doubleheader with Wentworth that begins at 3:30 PM, while Worcester State travels across town to take on Clark in a non-league twinbill on Tuesday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. that begins at 3:00 PM.
