Women's Lacrosse Wins Season Opener, 9-7, Over WestConn

Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College women’s lacrosse team got a hat trick from junior Shannon Feeley (West Springfield, MA) as they won their 2008 season opener, 9-7, over the Colonials of Western Connecticut State University on a frigid Tuesday night at Coughlin Field. The win gets the Lancers off to a 1-0 start while WestConn falls to 0-4 on the young season.

WestConn’s Ashley Caruso (Northport, CT) opened the scoring with 21:29 remaining in the half when she found the back of the net on an unassisted score. Feeley answered back less than a minute later with her first of the season to tie the game at, 1-1.

After Brittany Jamieson (Foxboro, MA) gave the Lancers the lead, 2-1, WestConn got back to back goals from Whitney Fairchild (New Milford, CT) and Caitlin Everin (Glastonbury, CT) to take the lead back from Worcester State. Trailing, 3-2, Worcester State scored four unanswered goals late in the half which proved to be the difference in the evenly matched contest. Freshmen Angela Johnson (Ashby, MA) and Colleen Manning (Plainville, MA) each scored followed by sophomore Abby Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA) and Feeley’s second of the game to give Worcester State a, 6-3, lead. Caruso added a late WestConn goal to set the score at, 6-4, going to the break

Everin opened the second half with her second goal of the game for the Colonials to halve their deficit before Cosenza and junior Megan Rosborough (Uxbridge, MA) scored back to back to give Worcester State a three score lead at, 8-5. Caruso then scored her third and fourth of the night to bring the Colonials to within a goal but they would get no closer. Feeley added her third of the game with 3:47 left for the, 9-7, final.

Worcester State All-NEWLA goaltender Lyndsey Nunes (West Springfield, MA) made 7 stops on the night while her counterpart Angela Vargas (Stonington, CT) made 10 saves.

Feeley paced the Lancers with 3 goals and an assist. Cosenza was the only other multiple goal scorer with a pair of goals and a helper. WestConn was paced by game-high scorer Caruso who ended with 4 goals and a pair of assists.

Worcester State will begin their conference slate on Thursday when they travel to Emerson College. Western Connecticut will host Plymouth State on Friday.
