Western Connecticut Blanks Women's Soccer, 1-0

Western Connecticut 1, Worcester State 0

Danbury, CT --- Junior forward Lauren Francisco (Ludlow, MA) scored the game's only goal, in the 74th minute, and the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team held on for a 1-0 non-conference win over Worcester State University on Tuesday night.

Francisco, now with three goals on the season, was left alone at the top of the box and senior  Lauren Matthews (Monroe, CT) found her with a pass from the middle. Francisco turned and had an open attempt at Lancers' keeper Rachael Armenti (West Boylston, MA).

The Colonials, now 7-4 overall, had a 15-7 shot advantage on the slick turf and a 4-1 edge in corners. The Lancers slip to 5-4-1 with the loss.

Third-year Sarah Connors (Gardner, MA) had Worcester State's best opportunity to score on the night, but her free kick, from just outside the box, went directly into the waiting grasp of WestConn keeper Caitlin Avery (East Hampton).

Avery, this week's LEC Goalie of the Week, made three saves while Armenti made five stops for the Lancers.

WestConn plays host to UMass Boston on Saturday at 6 PM while the Lancers head to Westfield State for a 4 o'clock matchup.
