Macomber's Goals Move Women's Soccer Past Bridgewater State 3-1

Worcester, MA --- WSU freshman Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, MA) netted the first two goals of her collegiate career as the Lancers outlasted Bridgewater State, 3-1, in MASCAC action this evening at Coughlin Field.

Bridgewater State (5-2, 1-1 MASCAC) opened the scoring when freshman Mackenzie Hatfield (Whitman, MA) recorded her team-leading sixth goal of the season off a penalty kick in the 18th minute.

Macomber ignited the Worcester State (4-3, 2-0 MASCAC) offense after she entered the game midway through the half.

She would connect with sophomore Shelby Archer (Dayville, CT), who sent a long pass up the right side of the field, right to Macomber who unleashed a bullet from 25-yards out, for her first collegiate goal, with 12:25 left in the opening stanza.

The Blue and Gold went into the intermission holding the slight edge in shots, 5-3, and corner kicks, 4-2.

The second half started as a back and forth effort with no team earning a real opportunity over the first 15 minutes of the stanza.

But the Lancers ended the streak when sophomore Margo Clifford (Attleboro, MA) sent a cross toward the middle of the field that was redirected by junior Gaby Gonet's (Agawam, MA) header that found senior Brianne Beckman (Lakeville, MA), who notched the go-ahead tally.

The marker scored in the 62nd minute for Beckman was her team-best sixth goal of the campaign.

The Blue and Gold then had another great opportunity to extend the, lead when Gonet was awarded a penalty shot, only to be stone walled by BSU junior keeper Kerry Condon (Whitman, MA) in the 72nd minute.

However, nine minutes later Macomber was able to give the Lancers the insurance they were looking for after she corralled a loose ball and let go a laser beam from 20 yards out over Condon's head and into the back of the net for the 3-1 contest.

The Bears kept the pressure on and had a couple of late scoring chances, but were turned away by Worcester State freshman net-minder Mia Koutoulas (Danvers, MA) who stood strong between the pipes. Koutoulas made all of her four stops in the final period of action.

Condon finished the contest with four saves – including three in the second half.

Both teams ended the contest with 11 shots apiece while the Lancers held the slight advantage in corner kicks, 5-4.

Worcester State gets back in action on Thursday when they travel to Keene State for a 7 PM match-up, while Bridgewater State heads to Salve Regina for a 3:30 contest Tuesday afternoon.
