The Rich Korzec Athletic Service Award is the next award Worcester State Athletics is presenting as part of Virtual Awards Week.

The Rich Korzec Award is given annually to an individual who has shown exemplary service to the Athletic Department at Worcester State. The award is named after the late Rich Korzec, former Worcester State golf coach, who passed away in 2012.

This year’s recipient of the Rich Korzec Athletic Service Award is a member of the Worcester State football team, who has also spent his past two years as a sports information intern. 

On the field, this athlete is described by his coaches as a great teammate and solid defensive lineman. He is a two-time MASCAC All-Academic Team selection, and this season he was named to the Merc Morris Worcester Area All-Star Team. He was also the recipient of the Joseph R. Mewhiney Central Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation College Scholar-Athlete Award.

In the sports information department, this athlete gladly took on any task that was required of him, and was universally admired by his peers. Right from the start of the fall semester, the other interns in the department lovingly gave this athlete the unofficial title of “Intern Captain,” a role he fulfilled with grace. His witty, dry sense of humor regularly removed tension from stressful situations, but he also knew when to buckle down to the task at hand. This year, in his second year of the internship, he was relied on to train new interns on Photoshop and in-game statistical programs, which he handled with ease. This athlete’s commitment to the promotion of Worcester State student-athletes was exemplified when he volunteered to make 12 highlight videos in the span of a month in response to the spring sports cancellation, all which had to be done around his regular coursework and a job at a local restaurant.

This individual, as well as his often imitated, never duplicated deep dabs, will be missed in the Athletic Department in the fall.
