Baseball Falls To Wisconsin-Whitewater, 3-2 in 10 Innings

Venice, FL – The Worcester State College baseball team went to extra innings for the second time this year and fell, 3-2, to the Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks Wednesday afternoon at Venice High School. The loss drops the Lancers to 3-6 on the year, while Wisconsin-Whitewater improves to 5-1.

The Warhawks plated single runs in the top of the second and third innings to take a, 2-0, lead after 2 1/2. In the top of the second inning, Ben Prather scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Joe Munn. In the top of the 3rd frame, Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Ben Kuhlman singled home Thomas Corcoran who opened the innings with a base hit up the middle.

The Lancers answered back in the bottom of the inning plating a pair of runs to tie the game at, 2-2. Ryan Raleigh (Cranston, RI) walked and was sacrificed to second by freshman Corey Abbascia (Shrewsbury, MA). Junior Matt Hart (Easton, MA) doubled home Raleigh with the first Worcester State run of the day. After Ryan LaPrade (Leominster, MA) reached on a fielder’s choice, Chris Gusha (Rutland, MA) singled moving LaPrade to second. First baseman Nate Nelson (Worcester, MA) laced a single down the left field line driving in LaPrade with the game-tying run.

Worcester State had a chance to win it in the bottom of the 9th inning. Nick Caparell (N. Attleboro, MA) singled and stole second base. With 2 outs, Raleigh singled to center field and Wisconsin-Whitewater centerfielder Jordan Stine threw a strike to the plate to nab Caparell and send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the 10th, Corcoran doubled home Stine with the game winning run after Stine opened the inning being hit by a pitch getting to second base on a passed ball.

Pat Good (Hull, MA) and Kevin Hayes (Medford, MA) pitched will for the Lancers. Lefthander Tony Brunetta (Franklin, MA) took the hard luck loss after getting the Lancers out of a 9th inning jam.

Gusha was the only Lancer with multiple hits on the day.
