Worcester, MA- Second Year Coach Sophia Monopoli and the 2023 MASCAC Championship Worcester State University Field Hockey team have announced their 2024 slate of games. This season will be the second year the program competes solely in the MASCAC, where they were both regular season and conference champions last year. The team is prepared to defend their conference title after going 13-7, 9-1 last year and advancing to the NCAA Tournament first round versus Williams. The team will be led by captain, MASCAC Second Team selection, senior Madison Avilla and senior, and 2022 LEC Second Team goalkeeper, Madison Ferrara and MASCAC First Team selection, junior Allison Keenan. Joining the dynamic trio will be a talented squad of seasoned champion returners and fresh talent onto Coughlin field.
“I am so thrilled to start the 2024 season off with a team trip to Ireland” says Monopoli. “We are so thankful for this opportunity and can’t wait for the experience. We have a strong group returning, and I am looking forward to what’s in store for our team this season!”
The Worcester State Field Hockey team will kick off their season this year with a return meeting with Ulster in Ireland for a two-game international scrimmage set before kicking off the NCAA and Blue and Gold season with a mid-day matchup with Clark University on August 31st. The Lancers will quickly return to action, hitting the road to Wheaton on September 3rd before another Saturday afternoon meeting on the 7th, this time with Keene State. Continuing their home away schedule set, Worcester will journey west to Springfield on the 12th before returning home on the 17th for a Worcester City Battle with WPI. The MASCAC double series opens on September 21st with the Lancer’s journeying to Westfield State before hosting their conference home opener on the 27th with a Friday night’s battle against Bridgewater State the evening before homecoming.
October will see the team kick off the month with three on the road as they travel to Fitchburg State on the 1st, followed by Southern Maine on the 3rd and the first conference final rematch meeting with Framingham State on the 5th. In a bid to get prepped for potential NCAA play, the Lancers will host Endicott, another NCAA appearing team in 2023, on October 8th before returning to conference play on the 12th when they welcome the Vikings to Worcester State. The 15th will see Westfield back on Coughlin field, their first return since battling Worcester State in the inaugural MASCAC game last season, that Worcester claimed the 4-0 victory in. October 19th sends the Lancers to Bridgewater State followed by a week off before they host Fitchburg State in this season’s senior game versus Fitchburg State. The final home game of the season is set for the 30th in the final championship rematch versus Framingham State before Worcester closes out the season on November 2nd versus Salem State. The postseason slate of games will have a slight shift from last year with Field Hockey competing Tuesday, Thursday Saturday this year rather than a Championship Sunday for the teams.
