Fitchburg State Hands Ice Hockey 6-1 Setback

Fitchburg, MA –--  The Fitchburg State ice hockey team registered four power play makers as the Falcons rolled to a 6-1 MASCAC victory over Worcester State University this evening.

After a scoreless first period, Fitchburg State broke open the scoring, posting six combined goals over the final 40 minutes of play. The Falcons grabbed a 2-0 advantage midway through the second period as senior Billy Pescosolido (Framingham, MA) and junior Kris Threlkeld (Centerville, OH) converted back-to-back tallies. Pescosolido opened the Fitchburg State scoring with his sixth goal of the season at the 6:46 mark, while Threlkeld hit home for the eventual game-winner at 13:38.

In the third period, Worcester State marched back quickly, cutting the Fitchburg State lead to only one (2-1) on a Tim D'Orazio (Jamison, PA) score on an assist by sophomore Rob Serafini (Westford, MA), but the Falcons ended the Lancers comeback early, totaling four unanswered markers to the close out the contest. Sophomore Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, MA) got the Falcons rolling with his fifth marker of the season (power-play) at the 12:33 mark, before junior Thomas McAleer (East Islip, NY) followed with his eighth tally of the year (power-play) just 2:14 later.

Threlkeld added an insurance marker for Fitchburg State down the stretch for his second score of the contest, while junior Stephen Oldfield (Leominster, MA) connected for his first score in a Falcon uniform, rounding out the scoring with 53 seconds remaining on the clock.

Fitchburg State dominated the offensive front, out-shooting Worcester, 45-21 in the match. The Falcons benefitted from ten power play chances in the game and held the Lancers scoreless over their four, extra man opportunities. Senior Robert Vorse (Leominster, MA) recorded his fourth victory of the season, posting 20 saves in the complete game-effort, including a game-changing glove save late in the second period, while junior Bryan Kalczynski (Tonawanda, NY) stopped 39 shots for the visitors.

Fitchburg State (12-4-1, 6-3-1 MASCAC) will hit the ice again on Saturday as it travels to Plymouth State University at 7 PM Worcester State (7-6-3, 4-5-1 MASCAC) will travel to Westfield State on Saturday at 5:35 PM.
