Ice Hockey Drops 5-0 Decision To Salem State In MASCAC Quarterfinals

Salem, MA --- Salem State sophomore Ian Canty (S. Windsor, CT) highlighted five different players who netted goals as the third-seeded Vikings blanked #6 Worcester State, 5-0, this afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.

Salem State (14-11-1) moves on to play second-seeded UMass Dartmouth in the semifinals while the Lancers see their season come to a close at 6-17-3.

Canty got the scoring started early in the first when he deposited his second marker of the season at the 3:27 mark.

The Blue and Gold did have a power play chance four minutes later, but did not take advantage of the opportunity.

To start off the second frame, SSU junior Eric Defelice (Chalfont, PA) scored on a power play for his eighth goal of the campaign with 5:17 off the clock and sophomore Kristopher Faric (Whitby, Ontario) chipped in his ninth just seven minutes later to help the hosts lead 3-0 after two complete.

The Vikings opened up the game with two more tallies at the beginning of the third stanza. Senior Brian Hanafin (Burlington, MA) registered his first goal of the year and freshman Cam Moniz (Seekonk, MA) scooped in his ninth in a span of 63 ticks apart for what proved to be the final score.

SSU third-year Rick Sutliffe (Las Vegas, NV) stopped all 16 shots he faced to record his second career shutout in the win.

Freshman Salvatore Tecci (Franklin, MA) recorded 27 saves in 48:32 minutes of action before he was lifted for junior Taylor Fant (Boise, ID) who finished with six saves in the final 11:28.

Tecci, who finished the year 4-4-3 in a solid rookie campaign, finished the season with the second-lowest goals against average for a WSU net minder (2.88) and the third-highest save percentage in club history (.911) among goalies who have played at least 10 games.

The Lancers were outshot 38-16 and were 0-for-4 on the power play. Salem State was 2-for-6 with the extra man advantage.
