Ice Hockey To Hold “Pink The Rink” Event On Tuesday Evening

Worcester, MA --- The Worcester State University ice hockey team will hold a "Pink The Rink" event on Tuesday, at 8 PM against Salem State at the Hart Recreation Center.

The Lancers will use the opportunity to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

At the gate, pink bracelets will be on sale for $3 as any amount will be accepted to go towards the team's donation to the Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation.

Before the start of the contest, freshman goalie Tyler Fallica's mother will participate in a ceremonial puck drop as a breast cancer survivor.

The Blue and Gold will sell bracelets through Thursday evening's 8 PM "Senior Night" home contest against Framingham State at the Hart Recreation Center.

Since 1982, the Susan G. Komen Foundation has invested more than $2.5 billion in groundbreaking research, advocacy and programs in more than 30 countries. The organization addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the disease is the second leading cause of death among women and one in eight women over the course of their lifetime will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Over 220,000 women in the United States are diagnosed every year and more than 40,000 die.

Although breast cancer is rare for men, it is estimated that 2,190 men will be diagnosed and 410 will die from the disease. Men carry a higher mortality than women do, primarily because awareness among men is less and are, therefore, less likely to assume a lump is breast cancer, which causes delays in seeking treatment.

Those who wish to donate for a bracelet may also do so by speaking with an ice hockey player on campus or you can contact Sports Information Director Steve Miller at 508-929-8730 or smiller3@worcester.edu.
