Worcester State Claims No. 3 Seed in MASCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University men's ice hockey team wrapped up the regular season on Tuesday (Feb. 20) with a 13-10-2 record and an 8-8-2 league record enroute to a No. 3 spot in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) tournament.

 

During the regular season, Worcester State was led by junior Mike Moran (Milford, Mass.) who totaled a team-best 31 points on a team-high 16 goals and 15 assists. He also registered four power play goals which put him in the top-8 in the league. Mitchell Purdie (Peterborough, Ont.) recorded 15 assists along with three goals, while freshman Tim Drevitch (Oxford, N.J.) recorded a team second-best nine goals. Matthew Manning (Novi, Mich.) and Nick Patullo (Doylestown, Pa.) also contributed offensively for the Lancers.

 

The Lancers will begin the tournament on Saturday (Feb. 24) with the quarterfinal round as they host the No. 6 seed Salem State in a 7 p.m. game at the Worcester Ice Center. Also competing on Saturday will be the No. 4 seed UMass Dartmouth and the No. 5 seed Westfield State.

 

Top seed Plymouth State will then host the winner of the UMass Dartmouth/Westfield State game on Tuesday (Feb. 27) in the semifinals while No. 2 Fitchburg State will entertain the winner of the Worcester State/Salem State game.

 

The two semifinal winners will then face off for the MASCAC Tournament crown on Saturday, March 3 at a time to be determined for not only the conference title, but the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament.

 

During the 2017 MASCAC Tournament, second seed Salem State won its second straight tournament title with a 4-3 victory over top seed Plymouth State and earned a bid into the NCAA Tournament.
