Men's Soccer Defeated Twice At Union Tournament

Union College 3, Worcester State 0

Schenectady, NY --- Union scored a trio of first-half goals to post a 3-0 triumph over Worcester State in the Union College Tournament final on Saturday evening.

Senior Craig Santagello (Sayville, NY) got the scoring started on a marker in the third minute on an assist by junior Sebastian Jansen (Freetown, Sierra Leone).

The other two tallies came 90 seconds apart midway through the stanza when third-year Chris Chaquette (Springfield, MA) and senior Kevin Giron (Barrington, RI) each found the back of the net.

Fourth-year keepers Adam Margulies (Newtown, CT) and Mike Szczesniak (Armonk, NY) combined for the shutout for the Dutchmen. Senior Evan Wilga made five stops for the Lancers.

Despite the loss, the Lancers only trailed 14-10 in shots and actually led in corners, 3-2. Sophomore Brian Cormier (Hudson, MA) and senior Julian Morales (Brighton, MA) each chipped in with a trio of shots apiece.

The Lancers look to rebound on Thursday when they travel to Standish, Maine to take on St. Joseph's of Maine at 4 o'clock.

Union College 1, Worcester State 0

Schenectady, NY --- Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's sophomore Alex Dotseth (Colorado Springs, NY) scored a late goal in the second half to lift the Engineers to a 1-0 win in their season opener over Worcester State on Friday evening.

Dotseth's goal was initially set up off of a RPI corner kick from junior Sean Southall (Streetley, England). Junior Michael Birk (Albertson, NY) fed Dotseth a short pass and the sophomore fired a shot into the top right corner of the net with 16:13 remaining in the second half.

The first half was defined by a strong battle between RPI's offense and Worcester's defense.

The Engineers fired off 11 shots in the first 45 minutes for a total of 21 shots in the game (eight on goal).  The Lancers defense refused to let up, and senior goalkeeper Evan Wilga (Dudlely, MA) made two quick saves less than ten seconds apart to keep senior Alex Papageorgis (Montclair, NJ) from giving RPI the lead.

Worcester State's offense picked up in the second half with quick shots by freshman Michael Jordan (Ludlow, MA) and sophomore Alex Wolfel (Amston, CT).  But it was sophomore goalkeeper Craig Bennett's (Oakdale, NY) timely saves that gave RPI the shutout.

Bennett would finish with five stops while Wilga collected seven. The Engineers led in corners by a margin of 4-3.

RPI takes on Cazenovia tomorrow at 3:30 PM and Worcester State closes the Union Soccer Classic against Union at 7:00 PM.
