Worcester, MA- Looking to switch things up after a grueling start to the season, Worcester takes on the Fitchburg State Falcons in their conference opener in their bid for the first goal and win of the season for the squad.
Final
Worcester State: 1
Fitchburg State: 0
How it Happened:
In a tense meeting to open conference play, the Lancers were prepared for battle with the Falcons. Worcester came out with intensity, putting the pressure on the Falcon defense early while forcing away the equally dangerous attempts of the Falcons. In the 15th minute, capitalizing on a foul call just outside the box, junior SJ Aquino (Mon, Belgium) would send in a perfect cross that would find senior Brendan Lower (Grafton, MA) who redirected it to the back left corner of the cage for the 1-0 lead. As the temperature rose both in the air and on the field, each team battled for space and possession. Worcester would carry the 1-0 lead through to halftime.
The final 45 minutes just saw the emotional temperature rising as Fitchburg looked to level the field with some impressive attempts at the cage, but junior Tobias Schneider (Hudson, WI) would meet each challenge, smothering the Falcons attempts. While working the Lancer's defense with near misses the Lancers responded in kind keeping the action up on both ends of the pitch, holding on through some final minute attempts for the 1-0 win and opening conference victory.
Schneider would end the day with eight saves in the shutout.
What's Next:
Worcester State (1-3, 1-0) get a week of rest before continuing their conference schedule as they journey to Framingham State next Saturday for an 11am meeting with the Rams.
