Men's Track Places Third At MASCAC Outdoor Championships

Westfield, MA --- Freshman Duy Truong (Worcester, MA/Doherty) placed first in the long jump (6.60m/21-08) and ran the lead-off leg of the 4x100 meter relay's top time to underscore seven first-place finishes for the third-place Worcester State men's track and field team at the MASCAC Championships this afternoon at the Jerry Gravel Track at Westfield State.

Bridgewater State won the meet with 190.5 points followed by the Westfield State (175.5) and the Lancers score of 146. The Blue and Gold also tallied 91 points for fifth in the New England Alliance standings.

The 4x100 meter relay that was made up of Troung, sophomores Luke Curtis (Dudley, MA) and Ramses Rafael (Lawrence, MA) as well as junior Todd Paquin (Pelham, NH) broke the school record with a time of 42.31.

Not to be outdone, the 4x400 relay that Rafael, junior teammates Jon Parrella (Wilmington, MA) and Tim Mazeika (Millbury, MA), sophomore Kevin Maciel (Tewksbury, MA) placed first, finished in third in the Alliance (3:23.24) and stamped their ticket to the ECAC Division III Championships.

Parrella had the best MASCAC time in the 400 meter hurdles (55.67) while freshman Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) won the 200 meters (22.02). Maciel was second in the MASCAC in the 400 hurdles (56.11), Rafael was second 400 (51.03) and fourth in the 200 (22.82) as Paquin tacked on fourth in the 100 (11.33).

In the field, sophomore Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) earned first in the javelin (56.13m/184-02) and sophomore Andrew Johnson (Thompson, CT) had the highest leap in the high jump (1.90m/6-02.75).

Paquin was second in the long jump while Truong was third in the triple jump (12.75m/41-10), fourth in the 400 meter hurdles (57.52) and fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (16.47). Begley also registered third in the shot put (14.57m/47-01.75)

Junior Harrison McCann (Rutland, MA) also added second in the MASCAC and Alliance in the hammer (49.89m/163-08).

Sophomore Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) was fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (16.37) and pole vault (3.45m/11-03.75) Mazeika placed sixth in the 800 (1:59.32). Freshman Wesley Hebert (Leominster, MA)  helped pace the distance group with sixth in the 10,000 (35:35.95).

18 individuals and all three relays will compete next week at the Division III New England Championships at MIT.
