Lancers Downed in Final Second of Overtime versus Wellesley

Worcester, MA- After the traditional Worcester City Tournament kick off, that saw the Worcester State Women's Basketball team (1-1, 0-0) claim the victory in the consolation game, the Lancers are home to host their opener versus the Wellesley Blues in a well met meeting for the two teams. Last year's meeting found Worcester just nine points from victory in their last December battle, and with the home court advantage, are hoping for the tide to turn for victory this year.

Final

Worcester State: 55

Wellesley: 57

How it Happened:

The night started off hot for the Lancers in tonight's match up against the Wellesley Blues as they took a quick 6-0 lead to start the game. This came on the back to back threes from senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, MA) who had a stellar first half. She notched seven points along with three rebounds and two blocks to help keep the Blue and Gold in this game from the start. Senior Abby St. Martin (Putnam, CT) also had a solid first half with five points and three rebounds. Wellesley and Worcester would trade basket for basket and foul for foul through the opening 20 minutes of action as the Blues managed to grab a bit of breathing room from the Lancers, and would carry a 27-17 score into halftime.

The second half was a thriller as the Lancers were able to battle back to get the game back within their grasp. This high intensity half of action created back and forth from both teams scoring basket for basket as they both looked to gain the edge. With the score tied at 45 a piece as last effort baskets fell short, an overtime action of five minutes was needed.   Unfortunately the Blues were able to snag the win in overtime with big threes and free throw action made by Trinity Barrow to close out the game with no time left on the clock. Hurynowicz had herself another great half adding another 14 points to finish the game with 24 points to go along with the 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks.

What's Next:

Worcester State (1-2, 0-0) will remain at home for their next tip off as the Lasell Lasers travel to Brissette Court for a 1pm tip off.
