Lancers Drop Conference Meeting with Owls

Lancers Drop Conference Meeting with Owls

Worcester, MA- Coming off a two win streak that saw the Worcester State Women's Basketball team (7-7, 1-0) claim their first MASCAC victory of the season, the Lancers are looking to carry that momentum into tonight's battle with the Westfield State Owls (8-5, 1-0).

Final

Worcester State: 62

Westfield State: 77

How it Happened:

While sophomore Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) would open the scoring for Worcester the Lancers quickly found themselves in a back and forth battle through the opening quarter. Four different Lancers would help contribute to the scoring in the opening 10 minutes in the fast pace of the meeting. The second quarter would find more of the same intensity between the two squads with senior Abby St. Martin (Putnam, CT) kicking off the second quarter scoring lead grab. The Owls would go on a mid quarter spurt to grab a seven point lead but the Blue and Gold held strong to keep the game within striking distance as sophomore Hannah Lomonaco (Northbridge, MA) and sophomore Ava Lemanski (Clinton, MA) would work the court grabbing points. In the final minute before the half, the Owls would go on a deep offensive push to grab a 40-28 lead for the break.

Worcester would come back from the break cutting the Owls lead down to just nine before Westfield managed to find a chick in their defensive wall to capitalize on, pushing the lead up to 19 as the Owls found offensive success around the court. The Lancers would work to bring the lead down, but while cutting into the lead, the Owls were able to hold off the deep gain from Worcester, maintaining their double digit lead and the 77-62 victory.

Waldron would lead the night with 14 points while sophomore Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) would come away with seven rebounds in the match.

What's Next:

The Blue and Gold (7-8, 1-1) will return to action on Saturday to continue their conference schedule with a 2pm tip-ff with Bridgewater State.
