Lancers Claim the Home Opener Victory over Dean

Worcester, MA- After a grueling five game travel start for the Lancers Women's Basketball team (2-3, 0-0), they are finally back on their home court tonight as they host the Dean College Bulldogs.

Final

Worcester State: 95

Dean: 79

How it Happened:

The Bulldogs and Lancers opened a high-scoring 1st quarter in grand fashion. Dean's Abigail Lacy got things started with a layup but the Lancers immediately answered back with 11 consecutive points. Senior Hannah Lomonaco (Northbridge, MA) and senior Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) traded shots while Haynes made a jump shot. After the Bulldogs broke the scoreless streak, junior Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) immediately responded with a three pointer to get the crowd pumped. They forced some Dean turnovers and drew some fouls that resulted in some crucial points for Worcester.

The Lancers held the lead through the second quarter as they held control. Sophomore Emma Quinn (Wakefield, MA) opened with free throws and a layup to increase the Lancers' lead. First year Derin Tokcan (Istanbul, TR) hit a three to extend the lead. Haynes kept the momentum going with several assists. Despite Dean making it interesting, Worcester State's steady defense kept them in the lead as they headed to halftime with a 44-36 lead.

Worcester State kept control in the third quarter by piling on scores from Quinn,  Waldron, Tokcan, junior Ava Lemanski (Clinton, MA), and Lomonaco. Waldron set the tone with an opening 3-pointer. On the offense side, they continued to set themselves up well with consistent assists. They also had several steals to snatch the momentum away from the Bulldogs.

The fourth quarter saw the Lancers extend and hold onto their land. Waldron brought the energy with a three-pointer that set the tone for the Lancers. The Lancers did a strong job on defense as they continued to turn the ball over and kept the pressure on Dean College. Tokcan added a three-pointer of her own to keep the Lancer momentum going. Abigail Lacy continued to add on for the Bulldogs but the Lancers held strong as they finished off a 95-79 win.

Wrapping up the night on top of the scoring for Worcester was Waldron with 27 points while Haynes claimed a double-double with 12 rebounds and 15 points in the outing.
