Women's Soccer Drops Second Straight to Regionally Ranked Wheaton

Wheaton 3, Worcester State 1

Box Score

Norton, MA --- All of the offense occurred in the opening 28 minutes, as three players scored to send the Wheaton College women's soccer team past Worcester State College, 3-1 on Saturday in Mirrione Stadium.

The Lyons, who are receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll and stand fourth in New England, improved to 4-0. The Lancers, who had yielded six goals in their previous nine games, are 2-2.

Freshman Brittany Odgers (Roseland, NJ) provided her first collegiate points for the Lyons, recording a goal and an assist, while classmate Cassey Muse (Candia, NH) scored her fifth marker of the fall, including her third game-winner. Muse has now scored in each contest. Junior Amanda Resendes (Swansea, MA) netted the opening tally, while sophomore Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI) had one save.

For the visitors, sophomore Danielle Clifford (Attleboro, MA) scored her fourth goal of the campaign, and junior keeper Rachael Armenti (West Boylston, MA) made eight stops.

The Lyons, who held a 20-5 advantage in shots, got on the board after just 7:35 thanks to Resendes, who deked a defender near the right end line by switching the ball to her left foot and bending a shot into the upper left-hand corner of the frame.

At 18:22, Muse took an Odgers touch and lofted a shot from 15 yards over Armenti. However, the Lancers later cut their deficit in half when Clifford streaked toward the left side of the box, took a pass from freshman Brianne Beckman (Lakeville, MA) and chipped the ball over Leddy from 10 yards out at 26:13.

Just 1:29 later, Wheaton completed the scoring. After taking a through ball from junior Christina Bertrand (Agawam, MA), classmate Emily Hough (Norwich, VT) sent a cross that beat the keeper, and Odgers tapped the ball into an open net.

Worcester State hosts city-rival WPI on Tuesday at 7 PM while the Lyons head up to St. Joeseph's (ME) tomorrow for a 2:30 kick-off.

The contest against the Engineers will be broadcast live on http://www.mascac.tv.
