Women's Soccer Blanks Fitchburg State, 4-0, Claims MASCAC Regular Season Title

MASCAC Women's Soccer Tournament Seedings

Fitchburg, MA --- Junior Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, MA) tallied twice as she helped lead Worcester State to a 4-0 victory over Fitchburg State on the final weekend of MASCAC women's soccer play this morning at Elliot Field.

In the win, the Lancers (12-3-1, 7-0 MASCAC) claim their fourth MASCAC Regular Season title and the top seed in next week's conference tournament. They will play the winner of Tuesday's matchup between fourth-seeded Salem State and #5 Bridgewater State on Friday evening at 7 PM.

Fitchburg State concludes is 2014 campaign at 3-14-1 and 0-6-1 in league play.

WSU took the early 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when freshman Justine Butler (Marlboro, MA) hit Macomber in transition on a breakaway attempt for her 14th marker of the campaign.

FSU nearly equalled the score in the 30th minute when junior Jacqueline Walker (Derry, NH) and senior Sierra Santos (Lakeville, MA) both had great bids on net in the frame, but senior Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, MA) turned both shots aside to preserve the one-goal margin at the intermission.

The Lancers doubled their advantage 3:52 into the second period as Macomber fired a shot in the upper right corner off a cross from classmate Mackenzie Foye (Ludlow, MA) to help set a new program record for points. With 36 points on the campaign (15 goals - 6 assists), she eclipsed the mark that had been held by Vanessa Vallee (1998) and Melissa Crowley (1993).

Worcester State put the contest out of reach on tallies by senior Cassie Giardina (Pittsfield, MA) and sophomore Kendal Bergenholtz (N. Grafton, MA) midway through the stanza.

Witkowski turned aside eight to record her fifth shutout of the campaign while senior Kelsey Ford (Franconia, NH) collected seven in the setback for the hosts.

WSU led in shots 16-12 (11-8 on goal) as corners were even at one apiece.
