Women's Soccer Falls to #5 MIT

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Worcester State women's soccer team lost 4-1 against #5, Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Wednesday night at John F. Coughlin Field.

With the loss, Worcester State drops to 5-4-1, while the Engineers improve to 10-0-1.

MIT got off to a fast start with a goal by Kaitlin Zareno (Montebello, Calif.) from a great pass by Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.). The Engineers quickly followed with a goal from Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) off a cross from Mia Sedgwick (Wilmette, Illinois). First year forward Maddie Breuer (Hubbardston, Mass.) scored her first goal of her collegiate career late in the first half to cut the MIT lead to 1. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Spellman came up with 8 of her 17 saves in the first half to keep the Lancers in the fight.

MIT's Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) and Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) both scored goals to secure the win. Goalkeeper Lauren Castle (Ridgefield, Conn.) recorded a pair of saves on the night. After a hard fought battle, the Lancers were unable to overcome the deficit.

The Lancers return to action this Saturday when they host Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Westfield State. The match is set for a 12 p.m. start. MIT will look forward to their next matchup at home against Wheaton College at 1 p.m.
