Worcester, MA- After an exhilarating 0-0 tie earlier this week over Roger Williams, the Worcester State Women's Soccer Team (4-5-2, 1-2) is back in conference action and looking to continue their not only recent shutout success, but also extend that into winning success this afternoon versus the MCLA Trailblazers. A win today would put the Lancers at .500 in the conference and see them on a more solid footing for the remainder of the regular season schedule as they aim for a top spot in the postseason.
Final
Worcester State: 4
MCLA: 1
How it Happened:
The early part of the quarter saw both teams settling into their offensive structure looking for the plan of attack that would put points on the board. The first team that would find the net would be the Lancers when senior Maddie Breuer (Hubbardston, MA) grabbed the rebound from an attempt from sophomore Ava Lemanski (Clinton, MA) and redirected it into the back of the cage. This goal would set a precedent for the Worcester State Lancers where they would begin to control the pace of play for the rest of the half. The ball would spend most of its time by MCLA's net where many shot attempts would fly from the Lancers. The Trailblazer defense, beyond that first score, was playing a solid brand of "bend but don't break" defense. With the half almost over, the Trailblazers began to show minor cracks in their armor which would allow the Worcester State Lancers to slice through the defense for the contest's 2nd goal by sophomore Amanda Cosco (Watertown, MA) off a perfect placed past from senior Michaela O'Brien (Bedford, MA). The first half would be dominated offensively by the Worcester State Lancers, with a score of 2-0.
The second half would begin with a deep attack from the Blue and Gold, showing they mean to start where they left off in the first. This relentless attack would pay off with the Lancers scoring their first goal of the second half, and third on the game. This shot was made by sophomore Jessica Forbes (Clinton, MA) off a perfectly placed corner kick from O'Brien. The Trailblazers would feel the pressure and begin to attack with reckless abandonment, which would lead to their first score of the contest by Catelyn Hodge, who dropped a free position attempt just over the head of sophomore keeper Kylee Eliott (Dover, MA). Wanting to cut off any gained momentum, the Lancers attacked hard and fast trying to regain lost ground. The Lancers would score shortly after the Trailblazers goal. Guiding the score was sophomore Emma Jacob (Billerica, MA) again from the ever assistant O'Brien. Following this pair of scores, the game began to slow down as both teams looked to tighten up their defensive schemes. The Worcester State Lancers would continue to attack the MCLA Trailblazers, keeping the momentum and pressuring on their opponents allowing them to hold on for the 4-1 victory and find them solidify back at .500 on their record.
What's Next:
The Lancers (5-5-2, 2-2) are back on the road in six days when they travel to Framingham State on Friday, October 18th to matchup with the Rams.
