WORCESTER, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth women's tennis team defeated the Worcester State Lancers 7-2 in a tennis match Tuesday afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts on the campus of Clark University.
Worcester State was not far behind after the doubles competition, having recorded one win to give the Corsairs a 2-1 advantage to start. Though, the Lancers were unable to come back in the singles competition, as sophomore Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) recorded the only remaining point for Worcester State.
The sole point in the doubles competition for the Lancers was scored by junior Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) and senior Megan Shepard (Middletown, Conn.). The duo defeated UMass Dartmouth's Jenna Lahaie (Lakeville, Mass.) and senior Maggie LeBrun (Mattapoisett, Mass.) in a close set ending 9-7.
Down 2-1, the Lancers entered the singles competition fighting to take the lead. UMass Dartmouth's singles competitors nearly swept the Lancers except for a lone win by Worcester State's Green over UMass Dartmouth's sophomore Kheyla Orival (Woburn, Mass.). Green won the first set 6-3 and held Orival to zero in the second set.
UMass Dartmouth won the overall singles competition 5-1 over the Lancers, taking the overall 7-2 win home with them.
With the loss, Worcester State drops to .500 on the season (5-5), while they fall just below .500 in the Little East Conference with a 2-3 record. The Corsairs improve to 4-4 on the season, and now hold a 2-2 LEC record.
After having had four games in Worcester the past week, the Lancers will hit the road this Saturday as they take on top-conference opponent, Rhode Island College, at 1:00 p.m.
