The afternoon started out with a doubles sweep as the Lancers took the quick 3-0 lead off two 8-3 wins and one 8-2 win by sophomore Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) and senior Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.) who defeated the Colonials' Carine Jacque' (New London, Conn.) and Violet Lisi (New Fairfield, Conn.).
Already up by three, the singles matches were going to be the decision factors in who took the victory. Sophomore Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) started out strong with the Lancers' first singles win over WCSU's opponent, Karen Velez (Danbury, Conn.) in a 6-0 and 6-1 set. Senior Megan Shepard (Middletown, Conn.) defeated her opponent with the same score to take the team's 5-0 lead, clinching the win on the afternoon.
This is the Lancer's fourth sweep so far this season, as they also swept Becker College back in early September and then Little East Conference opponents Southern Maine and Salem State in mid-September.
With the win, the Lancers improve to 5-6 on the season and 3-3 in LEC play. The Colonials now drop to 1-4 in LEC play, and 6-4 overall.
The Lancers will be back in action tomorrow (Oct. 7), as they take on LEC opponent Rhode Island College on the road with a 3:30 p.m. start time.
