PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Worcester State University women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaking 5-1 loss to the undefeated No. 1 seeded Rhode Island College Anchorwomen Thursday afternoon in the Little East Conference (LEC) semifinal round.

THE MATCH
Rhode Island College came away with a 2-1 lead following doubles play as partners of Dayna Reilly (Swansea, Mass.)/Laurel Ten Eyck (Warwick, R.I.) and Grace Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.)/Victoria Vittori (New Bedford, Mass.) defeated Worcester's Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.)/Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) and Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.)/Marisa Lombardi (Ludlow, Mass.) at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively. The Lancers did see a win at the No. 2 doubles flight as Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) and Emma Collings (Marion, Mass.) were victors of an 8-4 match against Katherine Braganca (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Emily Orticerio (Smithfield, R.I.).
The Anchorwomen sealed the win at singles when they saw three consecutive wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 6 singles. Rhode Island College's Reilly shutout Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) 6-0, 6-0, in straight sets, and then Ten Eyck defeated Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) 6-1, 6-1 for the second singles win of the day. Rhode Island College's Zangari clinched the win as she forced a third set with Khafaga and came out on top 6-0.

"The outcome of this afternoon's match does not reflect the incredible season we had," stated head coach Courteney Blais. "The chemistry and depth of this team was special. We built on the success from last year, and I look forward to what next season will bring."
Blais mentioned, "Our seniors (Green and Silk) played their hearts out this fall and will be sorely missed!"
