Women's Track Places Fourth at Southern Maine Invitational

Gorham, ME --- Freshman Leah Walczak (Whitinsville, MA) finished first in the 400 and sophomore Mara Kralian (N. Grafton, MA) broke the school record in the long jump to highlight Worcester State women's indoor track and field team as they finished fourth with 103 points at the University of Southern Maine Invitational.

Kralian eclipsed the schools long jump record for the fourth time this season with a leap 5.47 meters in second place of while she also finished second in the 55 meter dash (7.47) after she blew away the field in the first preliminary heat with a time of 7.40. Walczak took the top spot in the 400 (1:01.29) before she notched second in the high jump (1.54m) and eighth in the 200 (28.42).

Freshman Cathy Chude (Marlboro, MA) had a solid meet as she tallied third in the 55 meter hurdles (9.09) and eighth in the high jump (1.40m) while junior Andrea Ouellette (Salisbury, MA) placed second in the triple jump (10.77m) and fifth in the 55 meter hurdles (9.34). Freshman Steph Muse (Chelmsford, MA) was four seconds off of Ouellette's time to score sixth place in the hurdles (9.38).

Sophomore Nicki Lemelin (Beverly, MA) also led the way for the sprinters as she clocked second in the 200 (27.75) and seventh in the 200 (7.79) while freshman Brianna Wise (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) registered third in the 55 (7.60). Freshman Rose Mathieu (Somerville, MA) ended her meet sixth overall in the 200 with a time of 28.09.

Freshman Erin Donohue (Saugus, MA) improved her time from last week to place fourth in the mile (5:34.10) as she also added tenth in the 800 (2:34.76) while classmate Brittany Grueter (Foxboro, MA) recorded sixth in the 3,000 (11:55.86). The mid-distance corps were also paced by Maura Withington (West Palm Beach, FL) and Kacy Gillis (Mansfield, MA) who finished in 11th (1:52.55) and 12th (1:55.48), respectively, in the 600.  

Sophomore Mercedes Arnold (Mira Loma, CA) helped to propel the effort in the field as she took home fourth in both the long jump (5.10m) and triple jump (10.40m). Junior Christina Bisbee (N. Attleboro, MA) was fifth in the weight throw while freshman Victoria Reizner (Southboro, MA) finished 12th in the shot put (9.70m) and 13th in the weight throw (10.40m). Freshman Kayle McElroy rounded out the finishers as she added 11th in the shot put (9.70m).

In relay action Mathieu, Ouellette, Gillis and freshman Natalie Marchi (Northbridge, MA) took fifth in the 4x400 meter relay (4.28.75).

Bates won the meet with 186.5 total points followed by Springfield (151.5), Southern Maine (117.5), Emmanuel (63.5) and Mount Holyoke (19).

Next week the Lancers are at Smith as it is their final meet before the MASCAC Championships on February 13.
