How it Happened:
The Lancers and the Anchormen went point for point throughout the first set of the match, with history being broken by graduate student Maeve Cadogan (Wilmington, Ma) taking the Worcester State career total blocks record. A roar of cheers after the record breaking block rallied the blue and gold for the remainder of the set. She also had help from her supporting cast with junior Cassidy D'Espocito (Medford, NY) playing lights out with 4 kills and 1 block. The Lancers looked to keep up with the pace but RIC was able to take the set, due to an early lead taken in the beginning with help from Rhiannon Hodovamec with 5 kills.
The second set was another thriller with both the Lancers and Anchormen answering each play, but a big run in the last couple minutes by RIC snatched the set out of Worcester State's hands. Rhiannon Hodovamec and Sarina Marines of RIC stepped up to keep them ahead of the blue and gold. The Lancers, Cadogan and D'Espocito, continued to have stellar performances. With 5 kills and 1 block for D'Espocito and 4 kills and 1 block for Cadogan. Senior Angela Colonis (Waterford, CT) also had a solid outing with 3 kills and 1 block. While the set was close, the Anchormen pushed in the last points to overcome the Lancers.
The third set started with seven unanswered points for RIC, however Worcester State would respond with a run of its own led by Cadogan. The Blue and Gold dominated pushing the score back to 7-7 within reach of stealing the lead. In a hard fought third, both teams pushed to hold their leads with great individual performances. Unfortunately, the Anchormen would take the set at 26-24 ending the match and giving RIC the win.
