Worcester State Hosts Dual Championships Sunday

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Athletics Department is excited to announce the hosting of a double Championship Sunday. The one seeded Worcester State Men's Basketball and Worcester State Women's Ice Hockey teams will host their respective championships Sunday February 26.

 

The Men's Basketball team will take the court at 4pm in a MASCAC rivalry rematch versus the third seeded Westfield State. The Lancers have dueled it out with Westfield for the last two MASCAC championships (2020 and 2022). The Lancers look to claim their first Championship since 1994 and continue their unbeaten stretch to 14. Worcester State defeated the Fitchburg State Falcons 74-56 on Friday night to advance to the championship. Tip-off is scheduled for 4pm on Brissette Court.

 

The well balanced, team focused, Worcester State squad is led by sophomore Aaron Nkrumah (Worcester, MA) with 416 points, 187 rebounds and 64 steals, graduate student Erik Bjorn (Holden, MA) with 238 points, 219 rebounds (15 away from a career 1,000), and 13 blocks, junior Ryan Rubenskas (Bridgewater, MA) who is tallied 370 points, 211 rebounds and 42 blocks, and senior Zion Hendrix (Charlotte, NC) who has recorded 268 points and 71 assists on the season. 

 

Women's Ice Hockey will host, for the second straight year, the second seeded Anna Maria Amcats in the ECHA Championship at the Fidelity Bank Ice Arena in Worcester. The Lancers won the inaugural Championship last season and look to add a second piece of championship hardware to their collection in only their second season of play. The Lancers defeated Assumption University 6-0 on Friday afternoon to advance to the finals. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:20pm.

 

The Lancer Women's Ice Hockey team is highlighted by skilled youth and experience heading into the championship. Graduate student Clare Conway (Billerica, MA) heads up the team with 22 goals, 12 assists for 34 points, senior Katie Puumala (Framingham, MA) with 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points and senior goalkeeper Amber Lee (Fairlawn, NJ) who has recorded a career high at Worcester State of a 1.74 GAA and .941% save percentage.
