Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College Lancer
baseball team baseball used 7 pitchers and banged out 16 hits on
the way to their 4th straight victory defeating Suffolk University,
14-10, Thursday afternoon in a game played at Assumption College.
The win inches the Lancers back towards the .500 level with a 12-14
record. Suffolk suffers just its 8th loss of the year as they stand
at 21-8.
The game was tied at, 7-7, after six innings and Suffolk posted
three runs in the top of the seventh frame to take a, 10-7, lead.
With two outs Paul Vittozzi (N. Reading, MA)
reached on an error followed by a walk to right fielder
Keith Carter (Newburyport, MA). The big blow came
on the next batter when Nick Martinho (Middleton,
MA) blasted his 7th homerun of the season over the right center
field fence to give the visitors the three run advantage.
Worcester State responded in the bottom of the seventh scoring four
runs. Chris Gusha (Rutland, MA) led of the inning
with a walk. Freshman Corey Abbascia (Shrewsbury,
MA) followed with a bunt single. Both he and Gusha advanced a base
on a throwing error by the third baseman. Nate
Nelson (Worcester, MA) knocked a single up the middle that
scored Gusha and Abbascia and he made it all the way to third base
when the outfield mishandled the play. Nelson scored the game-tying
run when Mike Moffett (Lowell, MA) grounded out to
second base. Ryan Raleigh (Cranston, RI) restarted
the rally with a single and then promptly stole second base. Junior
Matt Hart (Easton, MA) then drove in Raleigh with
the game-winning run giving Worcester State the, 11-10, lead after
seven innings. Worcester State went on to score three more in the
bottom of the eighth for the, 14-10, final.
Sophomore Will Thompson (Holden, MA) got his first
win of the season coming on in relief. Suffolk’s Cody
Moskovitz (Toronto, Ontario) took the loss. Six Lancers
had multiple hit days. Moffett had a team-high 4 RBI to help the
Lancers to the win. Suffolk, who outhit the Lancers, 17-16, on the
afternoon was paced by catcher Bobby Barrett
(Milton, MA) and designated hitter Dan Cohen
(Shaker Heights, OH) who each posted three hits.
