Field Hockey Cruises To 6-0 Win Over Becker

Worcester 6, Becker 0

Worcester, MA --- Senior Megan Feehan (Lunenburg, MA) netted a pair of goals and an assist to help lift Worcester State University to a 6-0 victory this evening over Becker College in non conference women's field hockey action at Coughlin Field.

The Lancers (4-4) were also paced by junior Samantha Janda (Sterling, MA) and classmate Molly Cotter (N. Easton, MA) who added two helpers apiece.

The Blue and Gold led 4-0 at the intermission. Cotter recorded her second goal of the season off an assist by Janda at 9:27 before Feehan sent in her shot 4 ½ minutes later from ten yards out on a dish by Cotter. Worcester State scored again at 21:17 when Karla Rotondi (Tewksbury, MA) took advantage of a scramble for the ball in front of the net and then freshman Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) scooped in her first collegiate goal towards the end of the stanza on a pass from Feehan.

WSU tacked on two more goals onto their lead in the second frame when Feehan and junior Sarah Cozzens (Lancaster, MA) each scored markers.

The Hawks (1-6) had two great chances to break the shutout in both halves. The first came on a breakaway midway through the first period on a shot by junior Victoria Sirchia (Goshen, CT), but third-year keeper Kat Masterjohn (Warren, MA) made a terrific stop to end the threat.

The other opportunity came in the last ten minutes of the contest. Freshman Alyssa Branquinho (Westport, MA) cranked one at Worcester State's net, but junior Ally Valencia (Foxboro, MA) was there to deflect the shot. First-year Michelle Griczika (Barre, MA) was there to catch the rebound, but Masterjohn rejected her bid out-of-bounds.

Masterjohn recorded her third shutout of the season as she finished with a three saves. Junior Nakita Gosselin (Springfield, VT) turned aside 11 shots for Becker.

Senior Carolyn Mueller (Glen Ridge, NJ) and classmate Jessica Provencher (Berwick, ME) each recorded defensive saves in the second stanza for Becker while Valencia is now alone at second in the Little East Conference with four stops on defense.

The Lancers will continue LEC play with a key game against Framingham State on the road on Saturday at 11 AM. The Hawks begin NECC action when they entertain Bay Path in an 11:15 morning matchup in Leicester.
