SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Worcester State University field hockey team's four-game season-opening winning streak came to an end Thursday evening, as the Lancers fell 3-2 in sudden death overtime to Springfield College at Stagg Field.

With the loss, Worcester State drops to 4-1 on the year. 

Springfield scored the game's opening tally just under two minutes into the second quarter, but Worcester State found a quick equalizer on the third goal of the season from senior Sophia Monopoli (Worcester, Mass.). 

The score was still tied 1-1 when senior Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) gave the Lancers their first lead of the contest 3:09 into to the third quarter. Monopoli was credited with an assist on Hopkins' go-ahead goal. 

With eight minutes remaining in regulation, however, Springfield knotted it up at 2-2 to force overtime, and 3:22 into the overtime period, the Pride potted the winner to end Worcester State's perfect season.

Worcester State goalkeeper Jess Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) took the loss in goal with a four-save effort. Worcester State and Springfield were even at 10 shots a peice in regulation play, but the Pride outshot the Lancers 3-0 in the overtime including the game-winning goal.

The Lancers will look to return to the win column when they host UMass Dartmouth at home on Saturday afternoon.
