Worcester State Loses To UMass Dartmouth, 78-65

Worcester, MA --- Four starters finished in double figures in scoring as the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs upended the host Lancers of Worcester State College by the final tally of, 78-65, Tuesday evening in Lancer Gymnasium.  The loss drops the Lancers to 1-2 on the year, while UMD remains perfect at 3-0.

UMass Dartmouth opened the game with a, 13-4, lead after the first five minutes of action and stretched the first half advantage to as many as 18 points before Worcester State closed the half with a, 6-0, run to go to the break down just 12 points, 37-25.  Sophomore Matt Walker (Brockton, MA) had the hot shooting touch for UMass Dartmouth as he was 3-for-3 from the field with all of his points coming on three point shots.   He lead the Corsairs with 9 first half points.  Junior Rece Freeman (Cambridge, MA) had a strong first half as well as he dished out 7 assists.  Worcester State was paced by junior Willis Martinez (Lawrence, MA) with 6 points.

The Lancers were never able to mount a serious run in the second half as they cut the lead to 11 twice but could get no closer.

Junior guard Elijah Sims (Worcester, MA), had a solid night for Worcester State as he led all scorers with 19 points.  Sophomore Brandon Fortes (Pawtucket, RI) also reached double figures with 10 points.  UMass Dartmouth was led by the strong inside presence of Dan Holbrook (Lexington, MA) who had a double-double scoring 15 points and hauling in 13 rebounds.  The big man also had 6 assists on the night.  Senior Cory Tynes (Springfield, MA), Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA) and A.J. Tavares (New Bedford, MA) all reached double digits with 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Worcester State returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Regis College.  UMass Dartmouth will host Bridgewater State College next Tuesday.
