PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Worcester State men's golf team finished fifth at this year's Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) championships, which were played yesterday and today at Berkshire Hills Country Club.
The Lancers were fifth after Day 1, which was shortened from 18 holes to 9 due to heavy rains in the Berkshires. They shot 179 as a team through those nine, and then completed a full round today and carded a 341 to finish the tournament at 520.
Senior Jake Poitras (Harwich, Mass.) was the top finisher for Worcester State, tying for 19th place. Poitras had the best round of the day today, shooting 82 after opening his tournament with a 46.
The best showing on Monday for the Lancers came from senior Will Sjogren (Auburn, Mass.), who shot 40 and was tied for third after the opening round. Sjogren shot 89 in today's round, and finished one shot back of Poitras, in a tie for 22nd.
Jack Ryan (Wakefield, Mass.) also cracked the top 25, tying for 24th place with a 46-84=130 outing. Patrick Rennie (Bridgewater, Mass.) placed 28th (49-86=135), and Max Joyner (Great Barrington, Mass.) was just one position behind him after posting 47-90=137.
Salem State University won the championship after placing all five of their golfers in the top ten. Viking Ethan Doyle won the event with a 111, four shots ahead of teammate Brian Cannata, who took second.
The Lancers will be right back on the course in just four days when they will play the Elms Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, October 9-10.
