Plymouth State Ends Ice Hockey's Run In 5-1 Defeat

Plymouth, NH --- Plymouth State senior JC Richardson (Fort Collins, CO) netted a goal and an assist as he helped lead Plymouth State to a 5-1 triumph over Worcester State in MASCAC men's ice hockey action this afternoon at Hanaway Rink.

The visiting Lancers (3-7, 1-4 MASCAC) scored the first goal on the first shot for either team almost four minutes into the contest, but it was all Panthers after that.

PSU (5-1, 4-1 MASCAC) tied it up midway through the first frame and added two goals in each of the final two periods.

Senior Alex Cottle (West Chester, PA) and freshman Zach Fox (Sandown, NH) tallied two assists each. Senior Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) earned the victory in the Panther goal, making 35 saves.

Lancer freshman goalie Salvatore Tecci (Franklin, MA) had a busy day in net and finished with 35 saves but suffered his first loss of the season (3-1-0).

Sophomore Brenton Dyok (Rocklin, CA.) put the Lancers on the board at the 3:44 mark of the first period, picking up a loose puck after sophomore Nathan Stanley (Meriden, ID) had a shot blocked, and lifted a backhander from the right circle just inside the left post.  PSU tied it six minutes later when Tecci made a save on a shot from the point by Richardson but freshman Andrew Wigg (Lantz, Nova Scotia) slid the rebound under Tecci for his second of the season.

After no penalties were called in the first period, PSU capitalized on the first Lancer penalty in the second.

Some nice passing from Cottle and Fox led to a goal by senior Kyle Greco (Hillside, IL), who fired a shot just inside the right post four minutes into the period. First-year Brantley Sherwood (San Anselmo, CA) picked up his first career goal three minutes later with nifty individual moves around both the defense and goaltender, a play that was set up by a long transition pass from junior Dave Walters (Ottawa, Ontario) and a touch bass by Fox.

PSU's top defensive pair each put goals on the scoreboard in the third period.  Senior Richie Zobak (Evergreen Park, Ill.) sent one from the point through traffic at the 3:20 mark that snuck through for his first of the campaign and Richardson skated in from the point and fired one in off the goal post with three minutes remaining for his second of the year.

The Panthers are back in action Thursday with a MASCAC game at UMass Dartmouth at 7:30 PM as Worcester State plays again next Saturday at home against Salem State at 4:30.
