Men's Soccer Finishes Season On High Note In Win Over Fitchburg State

Fitchburg, MA --- Freshman Ryan Tuggey (Pittsfield, MA) scored the lone goal of the contest early in the first half as Worcester State held on to a 1-0 MASCAC victory over Fitchburg State University this afternoon.

With the setback, Fitchburg State concludes its 2010 campaign with an overall record of 4-13-0 and a 1-6-0 mark in the MASCAC, while Worcester State improves to 5-12-0 on the year with a 2-5-0 clip in the conference.

Tuggey propelled the Lancers to their second league victory, scoring his first goal of the season in the 15th minute of the match. Junior Justin Biela (Bridgewater, MA) set up the eventual game-winner marker with a strike from the left side, but Tuggey tipped the ball off the far side post for a ricocheted goal at the 14:03 mark.

In the second half, play stalled as both teams battled for possession throughout the 20 yard lines. Fitchburg State threatened in the closing minutes of the contest, posting a pair of targets on net, but junior goalkeeper Evan Wilga (Webster, MA) came up big with two saves to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard.

Senior Dennis Kane (Monson, MA) inherited the Falcons first strike off a free-kick from 20 yards out before classmate Robbie Pacini (Stoneham, MA) nearly tied the contest with a short-range header in the final minute.

Worcester State outshot Fitchburg State 15-10 in the grueling battle for possession, while Fitchburg State registered a trio of corner kicks throughout the contest. Senior Alex Ivanov (Carlisle, MA) closed out his 2010 season with four stops in net for the Falcons, while Wilga recorded three stops for the Lancers.
