Softball Sweeps Afternoon With Wins Over Richard Stockton and St. Joseph's of Maine

Fort Myers, FL --- Junior Jaime Jacobs (Billerica, MA) smacked the game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 3-1 triumph over Richard Stockton and sophomore Hannah Everson (Methuen, MA) hurled a one-hitter in a 4-1 victory over St. Joseph's of Maine as Worcester State posted triumphs to improve their record to 5-1.

The Osprey's (2-1) snapped a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth as they strung together three outfield singles with sophomore Heather Corica (Islen, NJ) finishing off the rally with an RBI base-knock.

After ending frame with Richard Stockton runners on second and third, senior Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, MA) would retire 10 of the last 11 batters that she would face. Mahoney (2-0) would go the distance and allow one run with six hits and eight strikeouts.

Mahoney's effort would allow the Lancers to rally and earn the come-from-behind victory.

With two outs in the fifth, junior Lauren Besozzi (Milford, MA) and sophomore Kylene Pease (Ashland, MA) notched back-to-back singles before third-year Ashley Howe (Winchendon, MA) loaded the bases for WSU with a walk. Junior Erica Cordio (Leominster, MA) would then record the key single to tie equalize the game at 1-1.

That would set the stage for Jacobs' solo homer to left field for the go-ahead score in the top of the sixth. Freshman Carolyn Hassett (Charlton, MA) reached on a single to the pitcher and then moved into scoring position on a miscue in the infield. After Hassett moved to third on a bunt, she would score on a ground-out by sophomore Alex Kerr (Franklin, MA) for some insurance and the 3-1 score.

Osprey senior Brittany Giacomelli (Vineland, NJ) was the tough luck loser as she went six innings allowing three runs (two earned) with two walks and two strikeouts. Giacomelli is now 1-1 on the season.

Neither squad registered a multi-base hittter while they were tied 6-6 in total hits.

In their victory against St. Joseph's of Maine, Jacobs continued her torrid afternoon with a two-run single in the top of the first to drive in Kerr and Cordio.

In the top of the second Worcester State tacked on two more runs when Everson scored from first after hitting a one-out single after Besozzi lined a single that got past the right fielder. Besozzi then came around to score from third when Pease reached on an error at third base.

Everson went the distance allowing just one hit in six innings. Her lone blemish was a solo home run by Monks first baseman Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME) in the bottom of the fifth.

Everson finished with seven strikeouts. Pease and Hassett each had two hits in the nightcap.

After an off day, the Lancers will take on Amherst and Deleware Valley at 1 PM and 3 PM, respectively.
