Trinity Takes Two From Softball In Regular Season Finale

Worcester, MA --- Trinity freshman Miranda Riendeau-Card (Bowdoinham, ME) went 6-for-6 with a pair of doubles, two homers, five runs and six RBIs as she helped the Bantams sweep Worcester State, 9-0 in five innings and 8-7, in non-conference softball action this evening.

With the pair of victories, Trinity (CT) sees their 2012 campaign come to an end at 15-18 while it marked the regular season finale for the Lancers who will host Westfield State on Thursday at 5 PM in the opening round of the MASCAC Softball Tournament.

In the opener, the Bantams got on the board with five runs in the top of the first. Reindeau-Card started the rally with a two-run single before junior Kerry McCarthy (Andover, MA) followed with a bases-clearing double.

Reindeau-Card blasted a two-run homer in the third and after junior Caroline Blanchard (Norwich, CT) produced a run on a single in the fourth, Reindeau-Card sent her team-leading 10th dinger with a solo shot over the fence in left for the 9-0 lead.

Senior Katherine Poulos (Wilton, CT) had a no-hitter going for the Bantams until junior Alex Kerr (Franklin, MA) broke it up with one out in the bottom of the fifth, for the only safety for the Lancers in the contest.

Poulos (5-12) would fan three, walk back-to-back batters in the fourth and allowed sophomore Carolyn Hassett (Charlton, MA) to reach in the second at-bat of the contest on a miscue at third.

Freshman Kaitlyn Roy (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) yielded nine earned runs on 13 base-knocks as she walked one and struck out no one. Roy's record dropped to 4-3 with the setback.

Reindeau-Card was 3-for-3 with a trio of runs scored and five RBIs while senior Krista Yu (Andover, MA) was 2-for-2 and junior Amelia Mostovoy (San Francisco, CA) chipped in with a pair of base-knocks.

In the nightcap, the Bantams plated an unearned run in the top of the third on an RBI ground out by Blanchard for the 1-0 advantage.

Trinity added four more runs an inning later as Mostovoy drove in one before coming across home plate on a passed ball while Yu and sophomore Christina Galese (Fairfield, NJ) both plated runs.

The visitors took over a commanding 7-0 margin in the fifth on back-to-back RBIs by second-year Claire Prosperi (Northbrook, IL) and McCarthy.

But the Lancers would break the shutout in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on the corners, Hassett produced two runs with a long single into the right field corner when Kerr scored the first and Cordio scampered home on the long throw back to the plate.

Worcester State then made it a 7-4 game when junior Aimee Lamoureux (E. Brookfield, MA) and Roy both knocked in runs.

Trinity, however, notched a key insurance run that would prove to be the difference in the sixth. Reindeau –Card came through for her team with a two-out RBI single to extend the lead to four.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Lancers staged a comeback bid that would ultimately fall short.

Cordio, Hassett and Lamoureux all reached to juice the bases before Roy's at-bat induced an error in the infield that scored a pair of runs. Senior Jaime Jacobs (Billerica, MA) reached on a missed tag by the first baseman to drive home another and then classmate Ashley Howe (Winchendon, MA) loaded the bases again with a single to left.

But freshman reliever Katrina Kolbe (Washinigton, DC), who came into the contest to face Roy, buckled down and set down the final three batters consecutively. Kolbe earned her second save of the season by getting an out at home and by recording two punch outs to end the contest.

Senior Lindsay Gibbons (Basking Ridge, NJ) improved her mark to 7-1 by going six-plus innings allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits to go with one strikeout and a walk.

Sophomore Kelly Winter (Attleboro, MA) went the first four innings for the Lancers and then she was finished off by junior Melissa Beaudry (Worcester, MA/St. Peter-Marian). Winter (2-8) allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits with a trio of walks as Beaudry allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and she struck out two without issuing a free pass.

In the second contest, Reindeau-Card was 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored while Galese was 3-for-4 and Blanchard finished with two safeties.

Lamoureux recorded a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with a double and Hassett and Cordio each had two base-knocks each. All three scored six of Worcester State's seven runs.

The two squads were even in the hitting department ending the game with 11 apiece. Hassett also saw her 14-game hit-streak come to an end for the Lancers in the opener, but she would gun runners down each contest for nine outfield assists this season.
