Softball Sweeps The College of Wooster (OH) And Hamilton

Fort Meyers, FL --- The Worcester State softball team swept both of their games on Tuesday afternoon at the Lee County Complex with a 2-1 triumph in eight innings over The College of Wooster and a 7-3 victory over Hamilton in the nightcap.

In their opener, the contest was a pitcher's duel as the contest was scoreless through seven full innings. The Fighting Scots (7-6) were the only team through the entire contest that had a runner reach third – in the sixth inning – until a runner was placed at second for the international tie breaker in the eighth.

With freshman Casey Fielder (Pittsburg, PA) at second in the top of the eighth, Wooster found success when senior Erica Villa (Ashtabula, OH) started the frame with an infield single to the catcher. With Fielder at third and two outs, she scampered home on a passed ball for the 1-0 lead.

But the Lancers came right back and scored twice in the bottom of the eighth for the walk-off victory.

With one man down, junior Hillary Hart (Clinton, MA) started the rally with a single to left. Senior Alex Kerr (Franklin, MA) followed with another solo base-knock to help tie the score as first-year pinch runner Courtney Fluet (Worcester, MA/Doherty) crossed the plate.

Freshman Sara Pelletier (Leominster, MA) was the hero in the bottom of the eighth with a clean single up the middle to end the contest.

Fourth-year Hannah Everson (Methuen, MA) upped her record to 2-1 as she tossed eight full innings yielding just one run while scattering four base-knocks. Everson also fanned six and walked two.

Senior Jenn Horton (Worthington, OH) was tagged with the setback for the Fighting Scots. Horton (4-3) yielded two runs (one earned) to go with four hits and six strikeouts. She did not issue a free pass.
