Second Half Pressure Sends Cardinals Past Lancers

Second Half Pressure Sends Cardinals Past Lancers

Worcester, MA- Coming off a high intensity loss on Saturday, the Worcester State Women's Basketball team (7-9, 1-2) is aiming to get back in the win column with a strong showing versus Wesleyean tonight in an MLK basketball battle.

Final

Worcester State: 63

Wesleyan: 78

How it Happened:

In an out of conference NESCAC meeting, the Lancers put the pressure on early in their meeting with the Cardinals with the opening minutes a back and forth battle between the two teams. Sophomore Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) would open the scoring for Worcester and be a vital component of the quarter. The second would continue to see Smith partnering with senior Abby St. Martin (Putnam, CT) keeping pace with Wesleyan as they went into half down just six after a late basket from the Cardinals.

The bird quarter would find Welseyean jumping out in offense, pushing their lead out to 20 while Worcester focused on being the gap down. The lancers would bring the game back down behind senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, MA) as she took the team into action in the fourth. Both the Cardinals and Lancers would trade baskets in that fourth quarter jump and would bring the cardinals the win at 78-63.

Hurynowicz would continue her strong stretch with 26 points while sophomore Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) would grab 12 rebounds.

What's Next:

The Lancers (7-10, 1-2) will return to their home court on Wednesday to face off against the Salem State Vikings at 7:30pm in a bid to even out their conference record.
