LANCER OFFENSE TOO MUCH FOR BUCCANEERS

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University Lancers earned a 16-7 win over the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers on Friday in Buzzards Bay, MA.

Worcester scored the first two goals of the game, the first came two minutes in from senior attack Clare Conway (Billerica, MA). The second game halfway through the quarter from first-year Hannah Erickson (Dunstable, MA), a man-down, to make it 2-0. The Bucs cut the Lancer lead to one with a McLaughlin goal on a man advantage opportunity. Worcester added a third goal with 4:48 left in the quarter and took a 3-1 advantage to the second quarter.

In the second, Worcester went on a five-goal run over seven minutes to open their lead to 8-1. Senior midfielder Julia Ravenelle (Barrington, NH) scored the first of the quarter at 12:12, Conway scored the last of the five goals, with 7:23 left before half. DiScipio scored her lone goal with 3:22 left to make it 8-2. With 45 second left in the quarter, junior attack Shea Jarvis (Auburn, MA) scored on a free position to give the Lancers a 9-2 lead at the half.

The Buccaneers opened the third quarter by grabbing the momentum and scoring two unanswered goals, one from Llewellyn, the other from Albertson, both in the first 5:30 of the quarter. Worcester then rattled off three goals in three minutes, two of which came with one of their players on a yellow card. The Lancers led 12-4 with 3:45 left in the third. The Bucs closed out the third quarter scoring on Dickinson's first with 1:03 left. The teams went to the fourth with a 12-5 score.

In the fourth, the Bucs again scored the first goal of the quarter, a Durgin goal, unassisted. Worcester scored three in a row again, this time over seven minutes, to take a 15-6 lead and shut down the Bucs in their offensive end. Maritime scored once more, from Dickinson, with 2:28 left in regulation. First-year Ashley Hurley (Agawam, MA) scored her goal to cap off the game with a minute left. The Lancers took their second MASCAC win back to Worcester, 16-7.

Worcester's first-year goalkeeper Sofia Perivolotis made 7 stops on the as the Lancers improved to 7-5.

  • Clare Conway led all scorers with six goals.
  • Shea Jarvis scored four times with Hanna Erickson scoring three. 
  • Lily Gendron, Ashley Hurley and Julie Ravenelle all scored once.
  • Ravenelle and Abby Lauzon tallied three assists each. Conway and Emily Pavoni both had one helper.
  • Lauzon picked up a team-high seven ground balls. Gendron won a game-high seven draw controls.
  • Lauzon led all players with six caused turnovers.
  • Worcester picked up 25 ground balls, were successful on 19 of 24 clears, won 14 draw controls, scored on five of eight free position attempts and took a total of 27 shots.

 

The Lancers return to action on April 16th versus Salem State at Coughlin Field in Worcester.
