Salem State Sails to 7-2 Win Over Worcester State

Shrewsbury, MA --- Salem State University captured five singles matches and two doubles contest's to post a 7-2 victory this afternoon in Little East women's tennis action at Shrewsbury High School. With the win the Vikings remain unbeaten at 4-0 and 3-0 in the LEC while the Lancers slip to 3-3 and 1-3 in the conference.

The game was a finished match from a regularly scheduled contest on September 16 that was rained out. SSU held a 2-1 edge in pairs play before both teams left the courts at Clark University for cover.

Senior Alicia Poore (Stoneham, MA) paired with sophomore Michelle McEwen (Billerica, MA) for the 8-4 win at first doubles while junior Carley Muniz (Gloucester, MA) and classmate Lauren Turenne (Reading, MA) teamed to win second doubles, 8-0.

Worcester State's lone win came in the form of a 7-0 tiebreaker triumph at third doubles after an 8-8 draw in the set by freshman Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) and sophomore Mariah Tangney (W. Boylston, MA). The duo is currently unbeaten at 3-0.

At singles play, Poore won at first flight 6-0 and 6-2 as Turenne was victorious at second singles 6-0 and 6-1. Muniz earned the win at fourth singles 6-1 and 6-0, junior Patricia Quartararo (Lexington, MA) defeated Tangney at fifth singles 6-1 and 6-1 and sophomore Jessica Spinale (Saugus, MA) swept sixth singles 6-0 and 6-0.

Senior Courteney Blais (Paxton, MA) broke up the shutout bid by the Vikings in third singles as she notched the victory by scores of 7-6 and 6-4. Blais is now 3-1 in LEC third singles play.

The Lancers head to MCLA on Saturday for an 11 AM contest before they travel south to UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday for a 3 PM conference game. Salem State will continue LEC play with a road match at Plymouth State at noon on Saturday.
